THE CANTILEVERED BARN
DUNDAS, ONTARIO
ARCHITECTURE: SMPL DESIGN STUDIO
BUILDER: DB CUSTOM HOMES
Set within the pastoral landscape of Dundas Valley, this modern farmhouse reinterprets the traditional barn through precision, proportion, and warmth. Standing-seam metal, vertical wood siding, and soft grey masonry strike a balance between durability and tactility. The form is restrained but opens generously to its surroundings—expansive glazing frames long views of meadows and forested escarpment, letting the home act as both shelter and lens.
Inside, simplicity carries through. A vaulted living space with a sculptural fireplace anchors the plan, while the kitchen and dining areas flow toward a pool courtyard built for year-round gathering. Muted woods, natural stone, and warm metals create cohesion and calm—light, texture, and craftsmanship doing the work of ornament.
The Modern Farmstead balances rural character with modern clarity. A quiet, grounded home—connected to its land, and built on the enduring beauty of honest form and material.
